Ethnographic Field and Data Analysis Methods: One-on-one Mentoring

Abstract: Inspired by a discussion with students during the 2018 Society for Anthropological Sciences (SAS) Business Meeting, SAS organized a methods-focused mentoring event for students and professionals during the 2019 AAA Meetings. Due to the success of this event, we are expanding and offering this event again during the 2020 AAA meetings. Anthropology students are often expected to learn ethnographic research and analysis methods from reading case studies and handbooks and may not have an expert available with whom they can consult about specific methodological questions. To bridge this gap in anthropology education and professionalization, SAS invites interested students and professionals to engage directly with methodological experts about their research and analysis questions. Experts will be available to answer questions one-on-one about the following ethnographic research methods: cultural consensus, cultural consonance, corpus-driven ethnography, dissemination of results, elicitation by frame, free-listing, interviewing, lexical analysis, pile sorting, mixed methods research design, social network analysis, survey methods, eHRAF coding, and more. To familiarize attendees with their realms of expertise before the annual meeting, each expert participant will post materials (videos and manuscripts) demonstrating how they have applied their methodology within the context of a case study on the Society for Anthropological Sciences website: http://sas.anthroniche.com/mentoring-event-materials/ [now http://www.societyforanthropologicalsciences.org/p/mentoring-event-materials.html].
